A human bias against creativity?


Who doesn’t love creativity? Nobody, of course–but if that’s true, then why do we reject so much truly innovative thinking? Here is some interesting research showing that–despite all our protestations–we all have a deep-seated bias against novelty. It’s a version of the well-documented familiarity heuristic: The unfamiliar makes us cognitively uncomfortable, so we treat it–unconsciously–as aversive, unsafe, and unwelcome.
